The University of Alabama (UA), founded in 1831, is the state’s oldest public university and the senior comprehensive doctoral-level institution in the state of Alabama. UA consists of 12 academic colleges, offers over 200 fields of study, and is consistently ranked among the top 50 public US universities and colleges by US News & World Report. The University of Alabama has an enrollment of more than 30,000 students, including approximately 1,000 international students, and is located in the city of Tuscaloosa on a large, beautiful, traditional campus with a friendly atmosphere. Tuscaloosa has a population of approximately 90,000 people, is conveniently situated just 90 km southwest of the largest city in Alabama (Birmingham), and enjoys a temperate climate with four seasons, including long hot summers, short mild winters, and pleasantly warm springs and autumns. The English Language Institute (ELI), established by The University of Alabama in 1982, offers a year-round, six-level intensive English program designed primarily for students who need English for academic purposes. In addition, the ELI conducts special customized programs upon request for groups which have specialized needs. The ELI is accredited by the primary accrediting agency for intensive English programs in the United States, the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA), and is a member of UCIEP (University & College Intensive English Programs) and AAIEP (Association of American Intensive English Programs). Conditional admission to The University of Alabama is available to qualified international students whose English proficiency does not meet the minimum requirement at UA.
