The University of Pennsylvania established the English Language Programs (ELP) in the early 1960s to provide courses in English as a second/foreign language (ESL/EFL) and orientation to life in the United States. Each year, 1,800 students from all over the world come to the ELP. They study English for a wide variety of purposes, including: general English; business English; English for academic preparation; English for professions such as law, architecture, dental medicine, and nursing; and teacher training. The University of Pennsylvania (Penn) was founded in 1740 by Benjamin Franklin -- the noted diplomat, author, inventor, and scientist who discovered electricity. Penn is one of eight private universities known as the Ivy League. There are over 23,000 students at Penn, including 4,500 international students. Over 4,000 faculty members teach at Penn, including ten who have received Nobel Prizes in recent years.The University of Pennsylvania is consistently ranked as one of the best national universities in the USA. In their 2009 rankings, US News & World Report ranked Penn #6 out of 262 national universities.
