Each college / university will have its own policy, but below are some common reasons for waiving the English language test requirement. Country of study: Many times, the TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, etc can be waived if you've received your education in a country where English is the dominant language. Alternate exam: Some schools do allow you to use the ACT or SAT in place of a language proficiency exam. Conditional admission: You may also want to look into conditional admission. If you are willing to study English upon arrival, the institution may be able to admit you conditionally until the required score is achieved. Some universities even have programs where, upon completion, the student is allowed to transition into undergraduate study without taking the TOEFL. It depends on the school. At the University of North Texas you can show proof of English Language Proficiency by fulfilling one of these: www.international.unt.edu/elp. For students who want to better their English, we offer an Intensive English Language program (IELI). For many undergraduate program we offer Conditional Admission for those in IELI. There are 7 levels (0 to 6). You would take a placement test and be put into a level and work your way to the last level. Once you get there, then you can begin your UNT degree courses. Hi! At Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey we wouldn't require an English proficiency test if your schooling was in a country where English was the principal language. We also would exempt a student who achieved a grade of B or better in a college-level English composition course at an accrediated US college. We would also consider a student who has strong scores in the SAT critical reading and writing sections or in the ACT English section without an additional English proficiency test.
