What you need to send along with your application will depend on the college or university to which you are applying.

In terms of test scores, typically 4-year colleges and universities will require your ACT or SAT scores, and (if needed) your TOEFL or IELTS scores.

Many 2-year colleges like it when students can take the COMPASS Placement Tests before arriving on campus (i.e., remote testing, where you take COMPASS tests in your home country), as doing so helps ensure that the courses you need do not close before you have a chance to register for them.

Yes, it will depend on the school and the program for which you are applying. The most common requirements for an undergraduate application are:

  1. Official high school or undergraduate transcripts. Many universities will not require high school transcripts if you have attended university.
  2. Your TOEFL or IELTS score.
  3. Proof of financial support. This is only required if you will be applying for an F or J visa.

One item that is often overlooked is the scholarship application. Many schools have funding available for international students and you should check with your program to make sure you send in anything required in order to be considered for a scholarship.

Best of luck!

Yes, you almost always have to send other documents with your application. At the University of North Texas, we require official transcripts, proof of English Language Proficiency and Proof of Funding. Also some graduate departments require even more documents that you should research and make sure to turn in.

Hi! At Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in addition to the application, application fee, the Self-Reported Academic Record if you are still in high school (or high school transcripts if you have already graduated), transcripts from any other colleges you have attended, which all students must submit there are additional credentials required for international students. If your secondary schooling has been outside of the US in a country where English is not the principal language you would also need to submit an English proficiency test. In addition, students who will be studying on an F-1 visa need to submit financial documentation as part of the I-20 process.
